What it means

Measured fuel rail pressure exceeds the commanded value.1

Most likely causes

  1. Fuel pressure control valve (pressure regulator) stuck closed / not venting — The PCM commands lower rail pressure but the regulator fails to bleed excess, so measured pressure stays high. Typical on this platform: often a fuel pressure control valve or rail pressure sensor fault.1
  2. Rail pressure sensor reading high / sensor drift or wiring fault — Sensor reports higher pressure than actual, causing PCM to think pressure is too high. Typical on this platform: often a fuel pressure control valve or rail pressure sensor fault.1
  3. High-pressure pump over-delivery due to contaminated fuel or internal failure — Contaminated fuel can cause high-pressure fuel pump and related fuel system failure.2
  4. PCM / pressure control strategy fault — PCM may command incorrect pressure due to software or input errors; generic definition is measured pressure exceeds commanded value.1

How to diagnose

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame data; confirm P0088 sets under load vs idle.
  2. Compare commanded vs actual rail pressure with scan tool at idle and during a controlled load increase.
  3. Inspect rail pressure sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, oil intrusion, or damage; check sensor supply/ground and signal voltage against spec.
  4. Command fuel pressure control valve duty cycle with scan tool and observe actual rail pressure response; look for lack of pressure reduction when commanded lower.
  5. Check low-side supply pressure and filter condition; low supply can cause erratic high-pressure control. Low-side pressure issues are indicated by P008A on this platform.
  6. Review fuel quality and contamination history; contaminated fuel is a known cause of high-pressure fuel pump and related fuel system failure.

Diagnostic labor varies; parts such as rail pressure sensor, pressure control valve, or high-pressure pump can be costly. High-pressure pump failures have been reported with very high repair costs.
