What it means

Boost pressure has exceeded the maximum allowed for current conditions.1

Most likely causes

  1. VGT vanes stuck closed — VGT vanes stuck closed can raise boost beyond target. Typical on this platform: VGT vanes stuck closed, actuator calibration fault, or a boost-sensor error.1
  2. Actuator calibration fault / learned travel out of range — Turbo actuator learned travel outside allowable range can cause overboost. Generic definition: The turbo actuator’s learned travel is outside the allowable range. Typical on this platform: Sticking VGT mechanism or a worn/failed actuator; sometimes clears after a successful relearn.2
  3. Boost/MAP sensor error — Erroneous boost sensor readings can trigger overboost detection. Typical on this platform: VGT vanes stuck closed, actuator calibration fault, or a boost-sensor error.1
  4. Boost control performance mismatch — Actual boost not tracking desired boost can contribute to overboost events. Generic definition: Actual boost does not track desired boost over a range of conditions. How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze-frame conditions for engine speed, load, and commanded vs actual boost.

  3. Check boost/MAP sensor readings against a calibrated reference and inspect wiring/connectors.
  4. Review related boost codes such as P2263 for boost system performance and P0299 for underboost to identify sticking VGT or sensor issues.
