What it means

The PCM compares expected versus actual airflow. A restriction or a leak between the air filter and the MAF causes the measured airflow to be inconsistent with engine operating conditions, so the PCM sets P2280.1

Most likely causes

  1. Loose or damaged intake tube/clamp between air filter housing and MAF — A loose clamp or cracked intake tube lets unmetered air in before the MAF, or creates a post-filter restriction. This is a typical cause on this platform.1
  2. Damaged air-filter housing or seal — Cracks or a poor seal at the air-filter housing allow unmetered air or create a restriction. Typical on this platform.1
  3. Very dirty or clogged air filter — Excessive filter restriction reduces airflow upstream of the MAF. Typical on this platform.1
  4. MAF sensor signal issue affecting airflow correlation — A missing or out-of-range MAF signal can contribute to airflow correlation faults. P0100 notes MAF circuit malfunction with contaminated element, connector corrosion, or wiring as typical on this platform.2

How to diagnose

  1. Verify freeze-frame conditions and confirm P2280 is present with no other intake-related codes.
  2. Visually inspect the entire intake path from air filter housing to turbo inlet for loose clamps, cracked tubes, or damaged housing/seals.
  3. Check air-filter condition and service history; inspect filter element for clogging or improper installation.
  4. Inspect MAF sensor connector for corrosion and wiring for damage; check MAF element for contamination.
  5. Using a scan tool, compare MAF grams/sec readings at idle and during a steady cruise to expected values and look for erratic behavior.
  6. Perform a smoke test or careful visual check for unmetered air leaks between filter and MAF; do not pressurize high-pressure fuel components.
  7. If airflow data is plausible but restriction is suspected, measure intake restriction per service information and replace filter/housing as needed.
  8. Clear codes and test drive under varied load to confirm the fault does not return.
